Find Your Brand
(partial mini-course - click here to be sent the full course)
What do you look like? Who are you inside? What types of characters do you most enjoy playing? These are all important questions to ask yourself as an actor.
I'd like you to imagine two scenarios:
Scenario 1: You are sitting in an audition room, ready to go in and read for a part. You've memorized the lines and think you fit the bill. You're hoping that they like your look, but you're worried someone else waiting in the room looks even more like the character than you. You also don't have that many professional credits under your belt. They call you in, you do your audition, and then you leave, never to hear from them again, a bit annoyed that you wasted your time going out for an audition that never materialized into anything.
Scenario 2: You are sitting in an audition room, ready to go in and read for this part that was completely meant for you. It was easy to memorize the lines because you live and breathe the character, and you know you naturally fit the bill. You know they'll love your look and no one else in the room matches this character type as perfectly as you do. You don't have too many professional credits under your belt, but you're not concerned because your resume is filled with roles that are very similar to the character type you're about to audition for. They call you in, you have the best time of your life playing a character you absolutely love, and they offer you the job right there on the spot. Booked it, and you know you'll do your best work on set and make amazing new connections with people in the industry.
Which scenario would you rather be in?

Now, think about the photo above. Does he have a brand? Absolutely.
What kind of feeling do you get when you look at that headshot? One of intensity? Intrigue? Confidence? Hardened street thug?
It's a stylized headshot that tells a story and captures the attention of the viewer. And if he submitted for an Asian gangster style role, do you think he'd get called in? Absolutely.
That's the power of a brand. If your headshot and marketing materials are bland and don't say anything specific, you'll constantly wonder why you struggle to book jobs. But when you discover your unique brand, everything changes.

So how do you do find your brand? Three steps:
Step 1: Find your archetype. Click the image below to read the Find Your Type PDF file that goes through all the possible archetypes and what they mean. While reading, think about which archetype feels most "you." If you had to play one type for the next 5-10 years, which would you most enjoy playing? Which do you think would allow you to do your best work day in and day out?
Step 2: Find your look. Think about what you look like. Are you young? Old? Thin? Heavyset? Feminine? Masculine? Long haired? Short haired? Scruffy or clean shaven? All these aspects combine together to give you a look. Looking at yourself in the mirror, come up with a list of 5 different types of people you could imagine yourself playing. Be honest and think... can I play a cop or detective? Or am I too young for that? Can I play a student? An intern? A delinquent teenager? Or am I older and I could play a grandmother?
We'll go into greater detail on this section in the full mini course.
