Land an Agent

A Step-by-Step System to Sign With a Great Talent Agent in Just a Few Months... or Get Your Current One to Start Working 5X Harder for You

Imagine having a fantastic talent agent on your team who's just as excited as you are to get you in the room for the biggest film, TV, and theater auditions.

This is a digital course that can be accessed online from anywhere in the world.

"I’ve been working as an actor for almost 2 decades and was searching for the right agent for almost three years.

"I had done a career consultation with a well-known Business of Acting Coach a few years ago and it didn't help, so I was skeptical. How would Martin's material be any different?

"All that said, I actually signed with a great film & TV agent in less than six weeks using the material and strategies outlined in Land an Agent. So I'd say that if you really need an agent to get the roles you want, you should definitely try out Martin's program."

 – Tyrone L. Robinson,  Disney's Frozen on Broadway

The Worst Night Out Ever...

Imagine it’s a Saturday night and you’re about to go on a bar crawl with some of your best friends.

As you get to the front of the line, the bouncer looks at you.

“ID please.”

You reach into your pocket, only to realize to your horror... you forgot your wallet.

All you can do is stare in frustration and anger as all your friends go in - and you're left out in the cold.

That’s exactly how it can feel when you can't get in the room for those auditions reserved just for actors with great representation.

Why is getting a great agent such a challenge? What's the secret? And how do you get an agent who doesn't submit you enough to work harder?

Do you really need a resume a mile long, a fantastic demo reel, years of training, and tons of connections?

Does it really take attending countless workshops, analyzing every page on IMDB Pro to find agents, and sending out hundreds of headshots and resumes to rarely hear back?

Not at all.
Get the Details

Hi, I'm Martin Bentsen.

Picture
You might have seen me speak at NYU, Actor's Connection, or The Actor's Green Room. Or you might have taken headshots at my #1 Yelp and Google rated photography company called City Headshots.

I've had the opportunity to shoot for over 5,000 actors since 2009 when I started, and almost every week, someone asks if I know what they should do to get an agent.

How should I know? I used to think. I'm just a headshot photographer!

But soon, I started paying attention. I realized that most actors were so busy earning a living, paying their bills, training, and performing, that they had ZERO time to figure out how to position themselves properly so agents would want to represent them and casting directors would WANT to book them.

Check out the video below to learn why I decided to become an actor marketing coach:

I kept hearing the same things over and over again:
  • "If I could just get in the room, I'd have a chance. But how do you do that without an agent?"

  • "I honestly don't even know if my agent is submitting me. How can I ask without annoying him? I don't want to seem desperate."

  • "I keep getting different advice from people. One agent says she loves my headshot, and the next says the background is too dark and I'm not wearing a good outfit. How do I know who to listen to?"

One actress told me that the agent panels she used to go to were full of agents just looking to make money from students – they weren't actually planning to sign anyone!

Hearing all these crazy stories and questions made me want to spend some time researching to find out exactly what would and would not work for actors to sign and work with agents.

So I spent the next 3 years of my life reading books, taking marketing courses, and speaking with successful actors and agents (and even casting directors) to learn everything I could about the process of landing an agent.

And slowly a clear picture emerged.

In 2019, I came up with a theory:

I believed I had found a formula that, if followed, would enable ANY talented actor or actress to get a great agent - regardless of how many credits they had, who they knew, or what classes they took.
Mad Scientist
I felt like a mad scientist, extremely excited to test my hypothesis.

I reached out to three actors I knew and asked if they'd be interested in being a part of my little experiment.

They each had varying levels of experience - one had been acting for 15 years and was highly trained. He'd been looking for a good agent for two years with no luck. Another was just thirteen, still unsure of what she wanted in her acting career. And the third had just graduated from college and was at the very beginning of her professional career.

I took each of them through the simple, 4-step process I had developed, and within just a few weeks, all three signed with great agents and started getting submitted for work consistently.

So what did I learn?
Get the Details

The industry has not been completely honest with you.

They say the process of finding an agent can take years.

Years of showcases, pay to play auditions, agent workshops & seminars, one on ones, and more.

Years of building a resume, following up, and hoping to be in the right place at the right time.

Years of filling out HUGE spreadsheets with every agent's contact info, their assistant's names – every detail possible – and heck, maybe for good measure even their dog's names?

Without a clear, step by step path to follow, many actors wind up spending a ton of their most precious resource - their time - hoping the right agent will eventually find and sign with them.

They say a large part of landing an agent is luck. But is that really true?

Do you really need years and years of experience? Years and years of networking? Years and years of training?

And do you really need to be in the right place at the right time?

And if you happen to sign with an agent who doesn’t submit you for what you want, is it really true that there’s nothing you can do but wait out the contract?

The answer to all those questions is a resounding NO.

Picture
Picture
Picture

In fact, it’s absolutely possible to land an agent WAY sooner than you think by becoming highly strategic and taking on a leadership role in your acting career.

There are a few very simple things that, if done properly and with the right prep work, can get you signed by a fantastic agent in just a few months (sometimes even weeks).

And it’s completely possible to change a deadbeat agent - one who rarely submits you for anything - into one who works like crazy to get you in the room for the auditions you really want.

In fact, there are just two things that make the biggest difference when it comes to landing an agent and turning them into your biggest champion:

  1. A Bulletproof Strategy
  2. A Fantastic First Impression

Key #1 to Landing an Agent:
A Bulletproof Strategy

Most people who pursue goals focus on tactics instead of strategy. They have what's called Shiny Object Syndrome, where they keep looking for the next big idea or trick.

In fact, I used to have Shiny Object Syndrome myself and it kept me at a plateau in my business for almost six years!

Have you ever read articles like The 5 Fastest Ways to Get an Agent or 3 Unique Techniques to Connect with Casting Directors Through Instagram?

Articles like that get you pumped up for the moment, but after a few weeks of trying out the idea, you realize you're pretty much still exactly where you started, and so you decide to start looking for the next big idea.

Many actors looking for agents invest tons of hard-earned cash for headshots with big-name photographers and then go on to shoot high-end scenes for their reels - only to realize afterwards that most agents do NOT care who you took your headshots or how many professional scenes are in your reel.

Other actors spend hours and hours researching and painstakingly building spreadsheets. They hire Business of Acting coaches and attend never-ending agent seminars where they get contradictory advice that not only confuses them, but causes them to spend even more money with little to show for it in the end.

Looking for a magic bullet to land an agent is never going to work.

The fastest way to get an agent is to first figure out exactly who it is you want to target, and then follow a simple, straightforward strategy to get them to want to represent you.

Key #2 to Landing an Agent:
A Fantastic First Impression

Once you've decided which agents you want to target, how do you go about contacting them?

Do you mass mail your headshot and resume? Do you do a cold submission through their online submissions page?

Do you somehow find their email address online and contact them directly?

How you make contact means a lot and can either get you in for an interview... or get you posted on the Wall of Shame.

Being hyper targeted, sending the right cover letter, and making a fantastic first impression are just a few of the things that will make the difference in whether you get signed or not.

In fact, a great way to make a positive first impression is to go through someone you know.

But how do you find out which actors know which agents, how to get the introduction, and what to say once you're in the meeting?

I've found answers to all these questions and more.

For instance:

  • What do agents really want?
  • How do you stay at the top of an agent's mind... without annoying them?
  • What do I do if an agent says they love my stuff, but when I follow up I never hear back?
  • How do I avoid looking desperate to the agents I contact?
  • I already have a great agent, but I'd love to figure out how to make them even MORE effective.

The simple, 4-step system I've developed answers ALL these questions and more, and has worked for every talented actor who's implemented it so far.

It all
starts by laying out a bulletproof strategy to connect with the agents you want to meet, and then moves into ensuring you make the best possible first impression so they feel compelled to sign you.

Today, I'm excited to introduce you to...

Land an Agent is my brand new digital course that lays out the simple, 4-step strategy to find and sign with a great talent agent and/or get your current agent to start working WAY harder for you – in just a few months (or even weeks).

Since it's digital, you can take it from anywhere in the world and at your own pace. You'll have lifetime access so you can come back to it for a refresher at any point in the future.

Land an Agent will give you the tools you need to get in front of the right agents, and will show you EXACTLY what to do to get them to WANT to represent you.

I've spent three years researching and testing the material in this course to know that it works.

In fact, EVERY actor who's followed Land an Agent so far signed with a great agent in less than 12 weeks.

And after signing, they each went on to get in the room for MUCH bigger projects, including recurring roles in television, Broadway gigs, and even lead and supporting roles in feature films.

The key to being seen by the right casting directors for the right projects is to be able to get in the room. And that's what Land an Agent is all about.

Land an Agent includes:

  • 4 info-packed modules with over three hours of video content and text that show you exactly how to find, contact, interview, and get signed by an agent you love – and then get that agent to submit you consistently for bigger and bigger roles.

  • A bulletproof strategy that gets results. Not only will you receive tons of great tactics and ideas, but they will be laid out in an easy to follow format that shows you exactly what to do and in what order.

  • A special, private Vault filled with word for word email templates to contact agents, sample questions to ask agents in meetings to impress them, and even additional bonus videos including in-depth interviews with represented actors and agents in the industry.

"'Land an Agent' is a moment of 'I wish I knew this information 5 years ago.' It's straightforward, real info no-one else is going to share with you - especially not an agent.

"Martin takes you step by step through the process while explaining how to use every resource he provides to help you find and sign with an agent rather quickly.

"I really enjoyed the incredible resources, industry secrets, and an approach I’ve never heard before. If you’re looking for a systematic way to land an agent, this is it."

A Layout the Course:

Land an Agent outlines the step by step, proven formula I've used over and over to help actors I coach find great agents in just a few months (or even weeks), and turn deadbeat agents who rarely submit them for anything into agents that want to get them out there as much as possible.

It works:
  • Even if... you don't have a long list of credits on your resume and no industry contacts.
  • Even if... you have zero social media presence and no website.
  • Even if... you're non-union and unclear on your type or brand (you'll discover your brand in Module 2).

And don't worry:
  • There's no cold calling or cold emailing necessary.
  • You won't have to mass mail out hundreds of resumes and headshots at the risk of appearing needy and desperate.
  • You won't have to attend endless seminars and classes, hoping to get an offer at some point down the road.

How it Works:

The course is broken into four modules and a Vault that will be opened to you every few days over the course of two weeks.

Why over two weeks? Because I've found that if all the modules are made available immediately, people don't implement what they've learned properly.

I want you to take real action on the material, which is why I designed the course this way.

Here is a layout of the course:

Module 1:
Understanding the Agent

The first module dives deep on agents so you're knowledgeable on the subject and aren't going in blind.

You'll learn what agents really want, how agencies work, and how to find an agent that's right for you.

  • The top 9 traits that great agents are looking for in the actors they represent, and how to quickly develop them
  • Why having an agent AND manager could actually hurt your acting career
  • When and with whom to sign, and how to determine whether signing or freelancing is the better option
  • The most important differences between agents and managers, and why those differences matter

I've designed this as an easy-to-access video course you can go through from the comfort of your own home, at whatever time is most convenient.

For that reason, each of the videos is accessible 24/7 so you can watch at 3pm... or 3AM.

A Personal Welcome Message From Me

Check out this quick video to learn what the course is about, why I created it, and why it's different than anything else you can find online.

Is Land an Agent Right for You?

I have to be selective about who joins my courses or consults one on one with me.

Why? Because I don't want actors to spend their money and get no value. I want happy clients who can make the most out of their investments. For that reason:

I do NOT recommend you join Land an Agent if:

  • You're looking for a magic bullet, quick win. This is an in-depth course, and even though the exact, step by step system to land an agent is laid out, you'll still need to take action and do the work required. Plan on the process taking a few months before you sign with a great agent. This is not something that will happen overnight (and anyone who promises you overnight success shouldn't be trusted anyway).

  • You've never spent money on a professional headshot (or don't plan to). If you've never invested money in your acting career and don't plan to spend at least $300-500 to have professional headshots taken (with a photographer that specializes in headshots), you shouldn't take this course. Having a willingness to invest in your acting career – especially on your basic marketing materials like headshots – is a crucial part of an agent being willing to sign you.

  • You're simply looking for motivation and inspiration. This is not a "feel good and get pumped up" type of program. Although there's plenty of motivation and inspiration throughout the program, the truth is that we'll be getting extremely specific on tactics, strategy, email templates, specific to-do's, and more. If you're just wanting something to get you motivated and pumped, this course is probably not for you. Maybe just turn on some good music?

  • You're not willing to listen to "outside the industry" thinking. In order to speed up the process of getting an agent from years to months, a lot of what I teach in this course is different than what most people in the industry recommend. Some of the strategies are quite unusual and unexpected, especially the Reverse Agency Lookup, where you'll learn how to find the contact info, reels, and resumes of all the actors an agent represents. If you're uncomfortable with or unwilling to put aside your assumptions of how to go about landing an agent (and the speed with which it can happen by following this strategy), this program might not be right for you.

  • You're afraid of falling on your face and you want to be perfect. If you're afraid your technique, marketing materials, and resume are not good enough to land an agent, you'll need to set those assumptions aside. A large part of landing an agent is believing in yourself and being unafraid to fall down. In the Frequent Questions section at the bottom of this page, I'll explain in more detail how to know if you're ready for an agent.

Check out this special sneak peek video from the Vault, called Be OK With Falling Down:

On the other hand, I DO recommend you join Land an Agent if:

  • You're ready to invest in yourself and take your acting career to the next level. Most actors are willing to spend money on their training and headshots, but those are only a small piece of what can be done to start booking bigger roles. If you're ready to take that next step and begin auditioning for high-end, professional productions, I definitely recommend this course.
  • You're looking for a SYSTEM, not random tactics. If you're tired of reading blog after blog, doing endless research, attending expensive agent seminars, or feeling like the info you read online just doesn't go into enough detail, look no further. Land an Agent is a proven system that will show you every tactic, strategy, template, and word for word script you'll need to not only sign with a great agent, but to get them to want to submit you over and over. And it's laid out in a simple, easy to follow format that shows you exactly what to do and in what order.
  • You're willing to follow through and stick to the course for at least a few months. There is no doubt that landing a great agent takes time, but if you're methodical, do it right, and follow through, your acting career will skyrocket ahead.

Yes, You DO Have Other Options

There are definitely other options out there for you to land an agent or get your current one to work harder. There is plenty of free information online you can sift through, testing what works and what doesn't.

You can spend money and time attending agent seminars, learning bits and pieces of information, and never knowing if you'll sign with someone (or how long it will take).

You can even choose to do nothing at all and hope to be discovered by an agent (which I definitely don't recommend).

Or you can choose to try the Land an Agent system and see if it's right for you.

"Am I Ready for This?"

The number one question I get from actors considering Land an Agent is whether they're ready.

  • Am I actually ready for an agent? Am I good enough for someone to want to represent me?
  • Do I deserve to be able to perform in those bigger film & television roles?
  • Should I even spend the time and effort required to get an agent?

Self-doubt (and imposter syndrome) is WAY more common than you'd think. In fact, it's one of the biggest reasons actors stay stuck!

Have you ever gotten in your own way and blocked yourself from booking a role you really wanted? Have you ever sabotaged yourself?

This is actually the reason we see such "terrible" actors on TV and in movies - because the actors who are truly talented often fear they're not good enough, and keep holding themselves back.

Honestly, even if you don't invest in Land an Agent - if there was just one takeaway I'd want you to leave here with, it would be this:

The only way to truly become as talented as you can be is to start taking risks and putting yourself out there in a place where you can fail.

I believe you want to hold yourself to the highest possible standard, and telling yourself you're not ready yet is NOT holding yourself to the highest standard because it's keeping you in your comfort zone.

Remember: no one is ever going to hand you a permission slip and say, "You are now ready."

It's time for you to become the leader of your career and say, "I choose to move to the next level. I choose to figure it out and do what I have to. Why? Because I want to become the best actor I can possibly be."

If you agree with that, then you're ready for an agent.

A Super Secret Sneak Peek

Are you wondering what's in the program?

If so, I have a special video for you that outlines something I call the Reverse Agency Lookup technique. It's one of my favorite strategies from the course, and well... I'll let the video explain it. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I'm ready for an agent (and this course)?

The best way to think about whether you're ready for an agent would by asking yourself the following questions:  Do you want more in your acting career? Do you think it's time you step up your game and hold yourself to a higher standard? Do you want to start auditioning for professional film & TV work? Or national commercials and Broadway roles? Do you want to grow and take your acting ability to the next level? Do you want to feel confident in yourself on set? Do you want to start enjoying auditioning? And are you willing to put in the hard work to continue networking and submitting for jobs (and not sit on the sidelines after you get an agent hoping they'll do all of the work)? If the answer to all those questions is YES, then you're ready for an agent. And remember, even if you think you're not ready for an agent just yet, you can always refer back to this material at any point in the future, since you'll have lifetime access.

Do I need to be in SAG-AFTRA or be SAG-Eligible for an agent?
Fortunately no. There are plenty of actors with agents who are completely non-union, and many of whom that are not even SAG-Eligible. Of course being a union actor can definitely make the process quicker, but being non-union is certainly not something that will block you from getting an agent. In fact, once you get an agent it can actually become easier to get into the union since they'll be submitting you to lots of union projects!

How is this different from all the free information I can find online?
Most info online about what agents want or how to land an agent is either too vague or can be misleading since it's so general. This is the only in-depth course specifically focused on showing you exactly how to find, sign with, and manage an agent, from figuring out who to target and what to say to them, all the way through to showing you how to keep in touch and make the most out of your time working together. You won't find this information anywhere else in as much depth, and it won't be laid out in an easy to follow, step by step system.

Does this course focus on both legit and commercial agents? How about theatrical agents?
The process of landing an agent is similar for any type of talent agent and the course will work well for all of them. Legit agents (both theatrical and film/TV) are very selective about who they represent, and this course goes into great detail on how to sign with them. Commercial agents are often easier to sign with than legit agents, but this course works for them too.

Will I have to spend a ton of time researching and filling out spreadsheets?
There is just one simple spreadsheet to fill out, and it's easy and quick. You'll probably spend an hour or two researching agencies, but not much more than that. Why? Because your number one goal is to take action. Figuring out who you want to meet is step one, but actually reaching out, interviewing, and auditioning are all just as important!

Will you try to sell me other stuff like people always do in other seminars I attend?

I don't hard sell anyone. I do offer other programs and services, including headshots, reel shooting services, a book, and some other digital courses, but there will be no upselling going on in this course. Land an Agent is pure content, built around helping you reach your goals. Why? Because if I do my job right and you do land an agent using the material, you'll probably come back on your own when you're ready for another product or service (or you'll tell your friends). I don't want to try to convince you to buy something that isn't right for you!

How long does it take to land an agent with this course?
For some actors it can take about 3-4 months as long as they are well-trained. For most however, it usually just takes 6-8 weeks (especially if you already have connections and/or credits and your marketing materials are looking great)!

What if I'm already super busy and don't have time for another course?
Its understandable that you're probably super busy. These days, everyone is. Signing up for any new course can feel a bit daunting, but I've spent a lot of time making this course streamlined and simple so that even the busiest actor can learn the material and implement it in just a couple hours per week. Everything is laid out in a  simple, step by step format that's incredibly easy to follow. And remember - it's the people who prioritize properly who get ahead. Ask yourself, "Is landing an agent my number one goal right now?" If it is, I know you'll make it happen.

Is this an in-person or online program?
Land an Agent is a digital course you can access any time, day or night, from your computer. It consists of pre-recorded videos and text, along with homework assignments at the end of each module. After you place your payment, you'll instantly get access to Module 1 and the Vault, and then you'll receive an email from me every few days letting you know when the next module is available.

How much help will I get? Can I email you 1 on 1 if I get stuck?
Absolutely. I want to make the material in this course completely world-class, so I'm going to be updating it whenever someone contacts me with a question (at least for the foreseeable future). If you have a question that is not already answered in the course, feel free to reach out to me by replying to any of my emails and I'll respond to you with the answer and then update the course material so the answer is there for everyone else in the future!

What if I'm left handed? What if I live in a studio apartment in Brooklyn? What if I don't like eating Cheerios for breakfast? What if...?
Be careful about asking too many "what if" questions. Our brains have a tendency to want to find an excuse to avoid doing things that push us beyond our comfort zone. As an actor, your job is to keep expanding your comfort zone, especially if you want to make it to the next level in your career. So make a clear decision for yourself: either Land an Agent is right for you or it's not. Remember: deciding one way or another is always better than not deciding at all!

On "Becoming a Leader"

I'd like to ask you candidly: How many major auditions do you think you've missed because you didn't have an agent to submit you (or your current agent just wasn't working hard enough)?

I'll make an educated guess and say that the number is probably higher than what you want it to be.

Getting in the door is an extremely important part of the battle, and you and I both know that a great agent can make that WAY easier.

I'd like you to watch this final sneak peek video – taken directly from Module 4 of Land an Agent. It's called The Three Sides of an Actor.

"We can always get more money, but we can never get more time."

- Jim Rohn

I've spent years researching, testing, studying, and trying different approaches with real actors to see what works and what doesn't when it comes to landing an agent and managing them effectively.

And I've finally been able to take all I've learned and distill it down into a simple, streamlined course that will show you EXACTLY what to do to get a fantastic agent who works hard for you – within just a few months (sometimes even weeks).

If you're talented, I believe there's absolutely no reason at all that you shouldn't be invited to audition for ANY role you want.

There has been no roadmap to land a great agent until now.
