"I have no idea where to start..."

It's so hard to get your career going as an actor.

You may have tried Googling phrases like "how to become an actor" or "where to find auditions" and immediately come across articles that offer lots of free advice, but they don't really work.

Either the information is too generic (i.e. "you should start networking!") or WAY too complex and time-consuming.

To become an actor, there are so many things people will tell you to do:

  • Sign up for acting classes
  • Invest in professional headshots and reels
  • Get an agent or manager
  • And millions of other things...

And before you know it, you're overwhelmed with steps to take – each of which could take YEARS.

But are headshots, representation, and YEARS of training really necessary to get auditions?

As someone who's had the opportunity to work with thousands of actors over the past decade, I've found that most actors feel stuck because of two things:

  1. Having no idea how to get started: Unlike most career paths where you get a job and slowly work your way up to better positions and higher salaries, growing a career as an actor is completely ambiguous. There's no clear path and when you don't know exactly what to do, it's easy to get frustrated and stay stuck.
    1. Plus, the only advice your friends and family probably give is to "get a real job!"
  2. Inaccurate beliefs: The second most common reason actors get stuck is that think they're not ready to look for real auditions yet because they still need more training or experience (which may or may not be true). More on this soon.

Although the two reasons above are important, there's still one other critical factor that almost no one talks about.

Imagine trying to play a game of soccer with invisible goals. Do you think you'd have a good chance of winning? Or even scoring?

Heck no!

As they say, the most important first step in achieving success in anything is figuring out what you actually want. Or in other words, you need to get clear on your goals.

"Yes Martin, I've heard that before."

But are you clear on what goals to realistically set?

No one talks about this. Should you be trying to get an agent? Or should you be trying to get background work first so casting directors assume you're more experienced? Or should you aim to take a certain number of acting classes before looking for real acting work?

Not knowing how to set an achievable goal is the single biggest reason actors get stuck.

Here's a realistic, achievable goal that can make a HUGE difference:

If your long-term goal is to build a successful career performing in films, TV shows, and/or theatre, then your first realistic, achievable goal should be:

Auditioning at least 1-2 times per week for paid projects.

Not only is this attainable, but it's also something that will make it easy for you to start analyzing and figuring out where to improve (to eventually get bigger opportunities down the line).

When you're auditioning 5-6 times per month, you'll be able to figure out if your audition technique needs work, or if something else needs to change.

You'll also start seeing the same casting directors over and over again, which will make it easy to befriend them for bigger opportunities in the future.

Finally, auditioning that frequently will make you significantly more desirable to agents.

"But am I actually ready for that many auditions?"

  • "I don't even have a headshot yet. How can I start looking for real auditions?" (you don't need pro headshots when you're first starting out – in fact, getting them too soon can actually hurt you! more on this further down the page)
  • "I'm still in school and need to complete my training first." (waiting until after graduation is one of the costliest decisions you can make because your competition is going to skyrocket)
  • "Casting directors won't even take me seriously since I don't have good credits or training on my resume." (you're not going to be submitting to major TV shows and movie auditions at the beginning – don't jump the gun)

We all have a natural thermostat, or comfort level, in our lives.

With a thermostat, when the temperature in your home starts getting too cold, the heat kicks on to bring it back to a comfortable temperature.

Our own brain works much the same way: if we start failing too often or aren't making enough money for our comfort zone, we'll kick ourselves into high gear to fix the situation, until we bring things back to a comfortable level.

Unfortunately the opposite is also true.

If things start heating up too much, the thermostat turns on the air conditioner to cool the room back down.

Likewise, when an opportunity for success presents itself, we'll unconsciously self-sabotage in order to stay within our comfort zone.

Procrastinating, being lazy, and even telling ourselves, "I'm not ready yet," are all forms of unconscious self-sabotage.

We do this because our brain NEEDS to stay in its comfort zone to keep us "safe."

Deep down however, we all know that the only way to become
truly better at something is do it anyway, even if there's a chance we can fail.
Picture

It's easy to go to acting classes week after week and keep telling ourselves, "I'll be ready to try submitting myself for real auditions once I get X."

But if you've ever been in that situation, you know that your brain will keep inventing more things that you need before you'll feel ready – just to keep you in your comfort zone.

Before you know it, YEARS have passed by and you're still in the same exact place.

I myself used to be like that! I used to tell myself, "Eventually I'll be ready to do that. But if I try it now I might fail." And so I'd never try.

But one day I changed my thinking to, "I should constantly test myself to see how good I really am. Only then will I know how to REALLY improve."

And that's when everything changed.

Instead of it being me who determined whether I was good enough (which is inherently self-centered), I decided to let the world show me if was good enough.

Hey, I'm Martin Bentsen and I believe every actor deserves to take a shot.

Picture

It might not be hard to join an acting class, hire a coach, or get professional headshots, but if you're being honest, has your career been growing? Or do you feel stuck endlessly "training and preparing?"

I know actors who've gotten stuck for YEARS because they simply didn't know when to stop preparing and when to start taking action.

It's easy to get comfortable doing the same things you've always done, but if you let yourself slip into that pattern, before you know it DECADES will have flown by... and you'll look back wondering about all the opportunities that could have been.

Luckily, no matter how old you are, there's still time to build an acting career you're proud of.

If you believe you have something to offer this world through your performance, then I believe it's your OBLIGATION to start pursuing real acting work as soon as possible. The world needs you.

And that's exactly why I created

"I always thought you had to have professional experience, headshots, and an agent right away, but I now know that it doesn’t matter how experienced I am in the acting industry. What matters is to be consistent with my work, and to put myself out there to see progress and improvement.

With that being said I rate this course a 10. Thank you very much for your help and your wonderful lessons, I look forward from learning more of your courses in the future!"

– Ashley P.

A Layout of the Course:

Kickstart Your Acting Career is broken into five video lessons, each about 10-20 minutes long. The videos will be sent to you over the course of five days.

Day 1:
The Most Critical First Step

Too many actors hold themselves back because of one, simple first step they never wind up taking. Don't make the same mistake!

What's Covered:

  • The most critical first step to getting "unstuck" in your acting career
  • Why casting directors don't care about experience as much as you'd think (and what they care about instead)
  • All the "shiny objects" you can ignore – find out all the things you can STOP doing so you can put more time and attention where it matters

Day 2:
How to Find Real Acting Gigs

It's time to get things ready so when you start going after real acting jobs, you're taken seriously and given a fair shot!

What's Covered:

  • A simple strategy to access real auditions right away, even if you're brand new & just starting out (with zero credits/experience)
  • How to build a successful online acting profile – learn the 5 necessary puzzle pieces that can be created right now from home, easily and for free
  • The most important thing NOT to include in your acting profile (new actors make this mistake all the time, and it causes casting directors to assume they're extremely inexperienced)

Day 3:
Mandatory Marketing Materials

In this video, you'll learn about the two most important marketing materials, how to get them for free (as soon as today), and how to start using them properly.

What's Covered:

  • Save up to $2,000 in your acting career almost immediately, by avoiding the costly mistake so many new actors make (because they're told to spend money on these things by "industry experts")
  • How to get impressive photos onto your casting profiles right away, without spending any money or needing to do a lengthy photoshoot
  • A handy trick to get great footage of yourself online TODAY, without having to find and memorize a lengthy monologue or buy fancy video equipment

Day 4:
Time to Audition!

It's Day 4, and you're finally ready to start reaping the rewards for all the work you did in Days 2 and 3! Are you ready for real auditions?

What's Covered:

  • A simple process you can repeat over and over again to make generating consistent auditions a reality sooner than you think
  • How to stand out & be noticed by casting directors BEFORE you even audition – this technique can be used by anyone and takes less than 3 minutes to do
  • How to make getting consistent auditions easy, painless, and systematic – this is perfect for staying consistent in the long run (and it's ideal for people like me, who prefer to set up systems that just "run," almost on autopilot)

"I just want to say thank you so much for this lesson in particular. On Friday I got invited to an audition – with a note saying the creator was glad to hear about my experience!!! Your advice helped me stand out!"

Danielle S.

Day 5:
Let Your Career Take Flight

90% of the time, its not a lack of information that holds actors back. It's how they use that information, combined with the long-term strategy they follow.

What's Covered:

  • Why making mistakes at the beginning is necessary for long-term success, and how to embrace it and be OK with it
  • The 4 things casting directors DON’T care about... that most new actors spend way too much time worrying about (and can actually cause them to stay stuck for YEARS)
  • What to prepare for as you start to see more and more auditions, and how to avoid "shiny shortcuts" that won’t make a real difference in your acting career long-term

"Day 4 was so helpful for me. Using your formula, I secured a callback to a Hallmark movie and some independent films as well. I enjoy your videos and appreciate your advice and guidance!

– Kevin O.

You knew every blockage a new actor goes through and it felt so relatable. I’ve already got an audition today!

– Joshua C.

"Even though I'm from Germany, the tips were really awesome and helped me a lot! So I would rate it a 10/10!"

– Sofia P.

"I'd rate Kickstart Your Acting Career a 10 for SURE!! It has helped me so much in just 5 days and I'll take the lessons learned and the strategies mentioned with me everywhere I go! Thank you so much for your honesty and insight!!"

"I'm used to being offered advice that I've already tried (or which I don't feel is adapted to my situation), but your approach doesn't make me feel like I have to squeeze into an ill-fitted cooky-cutter. The exercises you offer are very effective in terms of results, and that clearly defines the value of your course.

I can feel your genuineness and for that you have my total respect. Thank you again for your dedication and support in this industry, Martin. I will remember your name and your kindness."

– Maéva L.

"I think one of the most helpful things to me of Kickstart Your Acting Career was the format itself. I am one of those 'spreadsheet people' who loves breakdowns and lists, so having everything divided into clear steps (which could all be accomplished in a week!) made it seem so much more manageable.

There are hundreds of articles with tips and they're great, but I have never seen a step-by-step program to getting started (or gaining momentum) like yours.
