"Wow, I still can't believe that happened."

I remember a number of years ago taking on my first paid client, Tyrone L. Robinson.

For many years he'd been wanting to get on Broadway.

Up until that point, his career was marked by a few co-star roles here and there, and he was supplementing his income by doing some independent directing of reel scenes with my team over at Actor Screener Shoot.

He didn't have a legit agent and felt stuck in his career, as it had been nearly 13 years of him doing the same level acting gigs, never really knowing how to go beyond the "I hope this next audition is my lucky one!" mentality.

Well, I took him on as sort of a "test" client, telling him he'd only have to pay after he reached his goal with me.

"So what goal do you really want?" I asked.

"To get on Broadway. I've been wanting it for seven years and I'm worried it will never happen. If it did, it would be life changing."

I thought for a moment, unsure if I'd be able to deliver. But then I thought, eh, what the hell.

I looked at him and said, "Let's do it. You only pay me if you get on Broadway."

And we got to work.

Four weeks later I get a call from him.

"Martin, you're not going to believe it. I just heard back, and it's confirmed. I'm going to be King Agnarr in Disney's Frozen on Broadway."

He paid me, and the rest as they say... is history.

Not really. Tyrone kept working with me. Two weeks after that, he landed his first ever legit film & TV agent. And a few weeks after that he booked his first ever guest star role in an HBO show.

Soon thereafter he landed a recurring role in Amsterdam.

And now at least once or twice a year Tyrone gets in touch with me for followup meetings to help him stay focused and continue moving his career forward. He's currently directing multiple major theatrical productions and is ready to start pursuing his next Broadway role.

Hi, I'm Martin Bentsen.

You might have seen me speak at NYU, Actor's Connection, or The Actor's Green Room. Or you might have taken headshots at my #1 Yelp and Google rated photography company called City Headshots.

I've had the opportunity to work with over 10,000 actors since 2009 when I started, and almost every week, someone would ask if I knew what they should do to book more acting work.

How should I know? I used to think. I'm just a headshot photographer!

But soon, I started paying attention. I realized that most actors were so busy earning a living, paying their bills, training, and performing, that they had ZERO time to figure out how to position themselves properly so they could start booking more consistent paid work.

The Importance of Thinking
"Outside the Industry"
(O.T.I.)

From having had the opportunity to work with so many different people in different industries through my headshot business, and from having studied so many different business programs to grow my own business, I've learned unique strategies that almost no one else in this industry has ever heard of.

I use strategies like the G.I.S.T. Method or YouTube analytics (to help you figure out exactly how to improve your reel), and I even help actors implement advanced website hacks that can make them appear like a specialist in every single type of character they want to play (as opposed to looking like a jack of all trades and master of none).

From implementing my Mathematics Strategy to 10X Your Auditions... to using advanced business copywriting techniques to improve cover letters:

"I've already gotten responses with the cover letter you gave me to use and I'm in the process of signing with a new agency! I am both surprised and not surprised. I knew that your strategies were effective but I just did not know how effective they would be! Thank you for your wisdom! It has blessed me." - Chloe M.

If there's one thing I've learned for successful marketing in business, it's this:

O.T.I. Business Lesson #1:
When Everyone Zigs, You Must Zag.

In an industry like acting, where every actor learns primarily from other actors, the information quickly gets stale:

  • "You need to get on casting websites and submit yourself for roles!"
  • "You need an agent right away, and for that you need to be on social media!"
  • "Without a professional headshot you'll never get anywhere!"

While these statements do have some merit, the problem is that if everyone else is doing the same thing, the competition SKYROCKETS.

There is a 1 in 3,000 chance that you'll book any role (that's how many actors typically get submitted for each role). So how do you expect to stand out if you're doing exactly the same thing everyone else is doing?

When everyone else Zigs, you need to be the one to Zag, and that involves thinking and acting "outside the industry."

O.T.I. Business Lesson #2
Strategy vs. Tactics

Would you bake a cake by randomly dumping flour, eggs, chocolate, and sugar onto a pan and sliding it into the oven?

Probably not.

Not having a long-term game plan, or Strategy, is one of the most common reason actors get stuck.

It can be easy to fall into the repetitive trap of:

  1. Endlessly attending classes and workshops, with no clear goal or outcome attached to each.
  2. Submitting over and over again online, but not seeing a noticeable improvement in the quality of work you're getting.
  3. Trying to get an agent or manager, hoping that everything will change when you do, but rarely hearing back when you reach out.

Whether you're brand new to the industry or you've been doing this for years, not having a crystal clear, step-by-step strategy can make building a successful acting career take WAY longer (and feel significantly more overwhelming & confusing).

What are you specifically planning to work on next month and why? How about in months 2, 3, and 4?

If you're not clear on this, years (or even decades) can pass you by, and before you know it you'll look back and wonder, "Where has all the time gone, and why is my career still in the same place?"

O.T.I. Business Lesson #3
The Three Levels of Mastery

A few years ago I read a business book by Michael Gerber, called The eMyth Revisited.

In it, Gerber says that the reason so many small businesses fail is NOT because of a lack of money or dire circumstances, but because the owner eventually just gets so fed up with feeling stuck and unable to grow that they simply decide to quit.

He outlined three traits all small business owners MUST have if they are to succeed: The Technician, The Manager, and The Entrepreneur.

When I read that, I suddenly realized how important those three traits were – not just for business owners, but for actors.

I then created the concept of The Three Levels of Mastery, as I like to call it:

  • Level 1: The Artist – This is the most crucial part of being a successful actor. If you’re not talented and your performances are unrealistic, you won’t get very far. No matter how great you are at the other two levels of mastery, no agent, manager, or casting director will ever consider you if your performances look forced, melodramatic, or fake.
  • Level 2: The Manager – Just as important as being a great Artist is being a fantastic Manager. Not a manager of other actors, but a manager of yourself. This means you need to be organized, focused, and strategic. It means you need to manage your finances, networking, and marketing. You need to ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Without this, you'll always feel stressed and overworked, which increases the chances of you giving up on your dream.
  • Level 3: The Entrepreneur – The Entrepreneur is the person in a business who takes risks. It's the person who has a bigger vision of what’s possible and is willing to invest in themselves and put their money, status, and reputation on the line for something they truly believe in. The Entrepreneur is the person who believes in themselves enough to say, “I’m going to do it. I don’t care what people around me say or think. I believe in this and will find a way to make it happen no matter what." Without that belief, you'll never get to where you want to be.

All three levels of mastery are required to get unstuck and avoid the trap of having a career that is just so-so, and never truly GREAT.

Are You Ready for Your Breakout Role?

My 3-month Breakout Role program is for actors ready to take their careers to the next level.

If you're feeling stuck, unsure of what to do, and you're ready to start booking roles at the next level the next three months are going to change your life.

Here's how it works:

  1. Step 1: Free consultation with me. Let's hop on Zoom and discuss you're career. What are the biggest things missing right now that, if changed, would be absolutely amazing? I'll get to know you and see if what you want is really going to be possible, and we'll decide if we're a good fit for one another.
  2. Step 2: Get the ball rolling. Once the initial deposit payment is placed (1/3 of the total cost), we'll schedule a start date, and I'll help you get set up for all the relevant resources, including 1-1 meetings with me, specific group workshops, asset creation (if included in your package), and more.
  3. Step 3: Time for implementation. Once we're clear on the exact steps you'll be taking, it's time to take action together. I'll be with you every step of the way to make sure everything that needs to get done gets done quickly, efficiently, and well.
  4. Step 4: Watch as you reach your goal. Because of the action plan we've created together and the steps we'll follow, you'll see yourself start getting unstuck and quickly moving towards your goal. Before you know it, you'll be where you want to be and feel ready to start pursuing whatever's next!

So now, I'd like to present:

Book Your Breakout Role

Book Your Breakout Role is 3-month program where I personally help you get clear on your goal, develop a step by step action plan together, and implement it.

You'll get access to private workshops on relevant topics, get private coaching on your audition technique and performance, and be given access to exclusive training whatever you need.

Book Your Breakout Role is guided by me, where I'll ensure you follow through and get to where you want to be.

  • Six 1-hour (or longer) Zoom calls with me where we strategize, implement, and follow through on the action plan we've created together. As we implement, we'll get feedback on what is and isn't working and make changes on the fly so you continue to move towards your goal as quickly as possible.

  • Private expert workshops and 1-1 coaching where you'll learn very specific lessons on not only how to improve your acting technique and improve your career, but also get connected directly to casting directors, agents, managers and more so you can create meaningful relationships with them that may lead to opportunities down the road.

  • Weekly email check-ins to make sure you're following through on your action plan. One of the biggest challenges actors face is staying on track for the long run, so don't worry! I'll be there via email to make sure you don't give up.

  • Audio and video recordings of our call, with my personal notes. At the beginning of the call, I'll ask if you're OK with me recording and sending you the audio/video files of our meetings (I will not use the recordings anywhere else of course). You'll be sent the recordings and have lifetime access to them so you can review at any time.
