Everyone does something specific when they're in front of the camera, whether it's turning to the side and tilting their head down and doing duck face... or completely covering their head because they absolutely HATE having photos taken!
My long-term goal is that one day everyone in the world feels comfortable with how they look and that no one minds having a picture taken. So as a way to take one small step towards that goal, here is a simple quote to remember next time you find yourself taking actor headshots (or doing any sort of photos):
"When you're 20 you care what everyone thinks about you. When you're 40 you don't care what people think about you. And when you're 60, you realize no one was ever thinking about you. And if they were, it was simply, 'I wonder what they're thinking of me?'"
The reason many of us dislike being on-camera is because we're worried how we'll look to others. Being on-camera can be just as uncomfortable as if you were placed at a piano to perform in front of a small audience, but you'd never played piano in your life!
If you were put into that position, would you freak out? I know I would.
But really, all you need to do to make it through a situation like that is think, "Screw it!" And then play a ridiculous, terrible song on the piano and laugh about it. Before long the entire audience will be laughing with you and everyone will be on your side.
Well, that's how to feel comfortable on-camera! Just laugh about it and have fun, and don't worry about capturing the perfect shot. People connect most with those who are passionate, genuine, and honest, and if you just go along for the ride, your photos will turn out way better than you could ever expect. Laughing leads to genuine smiles, and a genuine smile is the simplest thing you can do to look great on-camera. 🙂
