How to Become an Actor: Interview with Tyrone L. Robinson

I had the great opportunity to interview Tyrone Robinson, who is a friend of mine and not only a professional working actor with an agent and a lot of credits under his belt, but also someone who has written and directed his own award-winning short film.

His tips and tricks that he recommends in this article are absolutely fantastic, and I highly recommend you read this and implement some of them in your own acting career!

Here are some of the key takeaways from the interview:

  • Aiming for long-running shows is great because it means you'll have work for a longer time than the short periods of film-projects or commercials.
  • Having a team of teachers, coaches, and mentors to ask for guidance is invaluable, so start finding people you can trust now.
  • You should always be improving, especially in areas of health so you stay on top of your game. You career is dependent upon your physical well-being, so make sure to eat well and exercise.
  • Aim to target the specific role you are right for, and don't do a shotgun approach and try to apply to everything.
  • Understand the difference between a headshot that people like and one that actually books you work.
  • Paying to go to classes and meet casting directors and agents is very important.
  • When you go into auditions, make sure you appear confident and friendly.
  • Understand your type and how other people see you and don't waste your time auditioning for roles outside of that.
  • Ask and mention to everyone you are looking for an agent - you never know if your lawyer uncle knows an agent who's currently looking for a new actor!
  • Shooting your own short films can lead to amazing connections that can get you more acting work.
  • Make sure to have a solid "keep in touch" strategy so important people keep you on their radar.
  • And much more...
